Cable Reel Transporter System

A system that consists of two flanges, each of which attaches to one side of a wooden or plastic cable reel to facilitate transportation.

Description:

A cable reel transporter system is a safety engineering control that may reduce ergonomic injuries from lifting and transporting cable reels. It is designed with two reusable flanges that each attach on one side of a wooden or plastic cable reel to help maneuver large amounts of cable.

A cable reel transporter system, such as the SIMpull ™ Flange (figure 1), allows one person to turn a wooden or plastic reel up to 34 inches and 2000 pounds and removes the need to handle reel dispenser jack stands. Each flange rotates independently, and allows free movement of the reels.

Installation

To install a flange, insert the flange's hub lock into the 3-inch arbor hole of the cable reel and tighten the bolt (included) until the flange is flush against the reel. Then rotate the flange so that the arrow picture on the flange is pointing up. Next, use a power drill with a ¾-inch socket to actuate the screw jack and lift the reel off the floor, allowing it to spin within the flanges. Finally, use the system's magnetic chocks to stabilize the flanges and prevent them from rolling, enabling the reel to turn and dispense cables smoothly.

Risks Addressed:

Heavy lifting and carrying can cause lower back disorders, such as a muscle strain. A severe injury may be a disc herniation (“slipped disc”), which is bulging of disc material possibly pressing on the spinal cord or nerves that go into the leg. The cable reel transporter system can help reduce heavy lifting and carrying by allowing for simplified loading, unloading, and transport of heavy cable reels around the worksite.

How Risks are Reduced:

A cable reel transporter system reduces heavy lifting and carrying because workers can independently rotate a flange for easier maneuverability during transportation.
