Personal Fall Arrest Systems

A personal fall arrest system is an active form of fall protection designed to catch a worker after a fall to prevent severe injury. New smart self-retracting lifelines can also utilize sensors and bluetooth technology to help improve compliance, incident reporting, and inventory management.

Risks Addressed:

Working near unprotected roof edges, roof and floor openings, and on scaffolds, lift equipment, and ladders can expose workers to potential fall hazards when no passive fall protection is in place. Falls from height typically result in severe injuries or death. A PFAS is a type of personal protection equipment for fall protection designed to "catch" a person once he or she falls to minimize the potential for severe injury.

How Risks are Reduced:

Risks are reduced and controlled by the personal fall arrest system which is designed to prevent the employee from hitting the ground.  If an employee has fallen and the personal fall arrest system has been activated, the employee has two options.

The first option includes self rescue.  The second option includes the employee being rescued.  Rescue can be accomplished through a variety of methods to include such options as: mobile cranes, ladders, scissor lifts, articulating booms.
